Prof. Goldie Morgentaler presents the writing of her mother, Chava Rosenfarb, focusing on the recently published (2019)Confessions of a Yiddish Writer and Other Essays, an amazing volume which comprises thirteen personal and literary essays by Rosenfarb, ranging from autobiographical accounts of her childhood and experiences before and during the Holocaust to literary criticism that discusses the work of other Jewish writers. Chava Rosenfarb (1923-2011) was one of the most prominent Yiddish novelists of the second half of the twentieth century. Born in Poland in 1923, she survived the Lodz ghetto, Auschwitz, and Bergen-Belsen, immigrating to Canada in 1950 and settling in Montreal. There she wrote novels, poetry, short stories, plays, and essays, including The Tree of Life: A Trilogy of Life in the Lodz Ghetto, a seminal novel on the Holocaust. Zenia Larsson, Swedish writer, who in 1972 published Brev från en ny verklighet (Letters from a New Reality). Zenia was a friend from Poland and a long correspondent with Chava Rosenfarb (Goldie wrote about the friendship in: https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/arts-letters/articles/chava-and-zenia). Goldie Morgentaler is Professor of English at the University of Lethbridge. She is the translator from Yiddish to English of Chava Rosenfarb's work including Rosenfarb’s three-volume Holocaust novel, The Tree of Life: A Trilogy of Life in the Lodz Ghetto. Her translations have won several awards including the Canadian Jewish Book Award and the Modern Language Association’s Memorial Prize in Yiddish Studies. She is the editor, most recently, of a collection of Chava Rosenfarb's essays, called Confessions of a Yiddish Writer, published in 2019. She has also translated into English short stories by the Yiddish classical writer, I. L. Peretz,. She is a former language columnist for the Montreal Gazette, as well as the author of a book on Dickens and numerous articles including one on the translations of Dickens into Yiddish. Her translation into English of Chava Rosenfarb's play, The Bird of the Ghetto, provided the English sub-titles for the Yiddish-language zoom production of Rosenfarb’s play, The Bird of the Ghetto, by the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene. |
